RunnerDuck Home

WELCOME BACK:      Marilyn thanks you for the kind birthday wishes and no I'm not going to tell you how old she is! She did get some great presents at the party last Sunday. Lots of neat plants for the yard and gardening gloves to help with the job of planting them all. She also got a paper making kit that she has been wanting. If any of you have made paper and have any suggestions please drop her a line.
Last week we asked for help on selecting plants and fish for our pond. Well either you are shy or don't know about that stuff because no one made any suggestions. We did get lucky though in finding a fantastic fish and plant place in Mukilteo, Washington. It's called Moorehaven Water Gardens and what a great place. They have Koi ranging from $35 to $3,500 and lots of trophies to back up their pricing. They hadn't received their spring supply of water plants yet but should be in next week. This will give us a great excuse to go back. Here are some pictures I took of their grounds.

The people at Moorehaven are really knowledgeable and helpful. When you visit they give you a sizeable package of instructions on filtration, care and feeding of fish and maintenance of ponds. I mention this here because if you are thinking about putting in a pond they have all this information available on their web site at www.moorehaven.com.

What's New This Week? Monday is May Day and it always reminds Ken of when he was a kid growing up in North Bend, Nebraska. It is a small town and they always seemed to make a big deal out of every special day. They would spend hours making these beautiful baskets and fill them with flowers and favors. When they were complete they would take them to friends houses, put them on the porch, knock on the door and run like crazy. He didn't want them to know who they were from.
May Day has not been one of the bigger celebrated days in the United States but elsewhere it's a pretty big deal. If you want to find out more about May Day just go to www.umkc.edu/imc/mayday.htm they have a pretty good write up about it. While you are at it make a basket for a friend and make them happy.

COMPUTER TALK

We've all had problems with our computers from time to time and had to call for help. How many times have we been frustrated with those calls by getting passed around or just sitting on the phone forever waiting for someone? I know I've been there plenty of times and it's really frustrating.
I thought I would share with you some of the frustration from the other side. There is a site where tech support people can post their best stories about customers they have to deal with. After spending a little time at this site I'm sure you will have a little more sympathy the next time you have to call for support.
Just go to www.techcomedy.com. One word of caution, the language can be a little crude as these are real conversation with irate customers.
We still only have four cancer team members but they have generated 7,968 points and returned 35 results. That's pretty good for four people, just think what we could do if more of you joined. We are still looking for members to join the RunnerDuck cancer team at http://members.ud.com/home.htm, download and install the program. Once you've done that go back to their site and under Member Services select My Team Manager and then List All Teams. Look up RunnerDuck and after selecting it click on Join Team. An easier way is to just click HERE after you have set up the program and you'll go directly to the RunnerDuck Team.

SITE OF THE WEEK

I really like listening to music while I work away on this newsletter and our web page. There have been some pretty good sites to listen to but I think I have stumbled onto what I think is the best. It's not just a site but a free software program that handles all sorts of music tasks. It's called MusicMatch Jukebox and can be downloaded at www.musicmatch.com.
First of all it has a great selection of music stations. There is definitely something for everyone. You can just listen to one station or have them mixed up with different styles of music.
It is also a MP3 player with over 100,000 free downloads available. It's a CD burner and can convert MP3 to be played from a CD using a conventional CD player.
It's a big file at 9.6 meg but well worth it. There is a tutorial you can download that is 30 meg but there is also a smaller one and lots of on-line help. They also have a version you can purchase that has added features. To date I've been using the free version and works good for me.

Do you have a favorite site, besides RunnerDuck.com? Let me know and I'll share it with everyone. There are a billion sites out there and growing every day. I can't check them all out by myself so please share with us your findings.

KiDS CorNeR

The weather is getting warmer and what a great time to make bubbles, I mean BIG bubbles. This is a pretty simple project that will provide hours of fun and really impress your friends.
First we need to get the materials together.

  • 1 Wire Coat Hanger
  • Some scrap cloth like an old T-shirt or some thin cotton.
  • Some tape, duck tape works really good but most any waterproof tape will do.
  • A large shallow pan either round or square.
Bend the coat hanger to fit into the pan.

Wrap the coat hanger with the cloth. Tape it at the beginning and end with the tape.

Mix the following ingredients to make the bubble solution. Believe me this is a pretty strange mix but it works really good. You can try different things but we know that this works.
  • 1/2 Cup Dawn Dish Soap. Others will work but this works best.
  • 5 Tablespoons Glycerin
  • 4 Tablespoons Salad Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Vodka. I have no idea what this does but seems to help.
  • 5 Cups Water

Pour this mixture into your pan, dip your wand into it and wave it in the air. You should get lots of big bubbles that last a long time.

Be sure to visit the RunnerDuck Toy Store at www.runnerduck.com/rdtoys.htm.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A man goes into a supermarket and buys a tube of toothpaste, a bottle of Pepsi, a bag of tortilla chips, and a frozen pizza. The cute girl at the register looks at him and says, "Single, huh?"
Sarcastically the guy sneers, "Maybe. How'd you guess?"
She replies, "Because you're ugly."

Be sure to visit our Goodies Store. We are changing some of our designs so keep checking to see what we have in store. If you haven't made it to our store yet, check it out. We have lots of neat gifts. Just click on this banner.

CD OF THE WEEK

The Tempos big band brings you the CD of the week. Each week we bring you our CD pick based on price, content or just because we like it a lot. This week we've selected "Juggernaut" by the Frankie Capp/Nat Pierce Orchestra. This is a great CD with lots of old standards done to a tea! This CD is $ .99 off this week and you can get it at www.runnerduckmusic.bcentral-vstore.com

CONSERVATION TIP

After we talked about collecting water in a rain barrel some people have asked where they can get one. I don't know about your area but in the Seattle area there are several companies that deal in used 55 gallon drums. Better than that though, I would check with your local water district to see if they have them. Our water district has plastic 55 gallon drums that they have fitted with a screen on top to keep out the mosquitoes and a faucet at the bottom that a hose will fit on. All this for $20 bucks. The barrel we got originally came from Pepsi so a soft drink bottling company may be another source.

   THIS WEEKS FREE RECIPE
American Chop Suey

This is an original recipe from Marilyn's grandmother. We had this for her birthday and it was great.

  • 2 Veal Steaks cubed and browned
  • 2 Pork Steaks cubed and browned
  • 1 Pkg Chinese Egg Noodles, cooked per package instructions
  • 2 Cups Chopped Onion
  • 2 Cups Chopped Celery
  • 2 Cans Tomato Soup
  • 2 Cans Tomato Sauce
  • 1 Can Mushrooms 8 oz

Saute Onions, Celery and Mushrooms in butter and set aside.
Mix Tomato Soup and Tomato Sauce together and set aside.
Put alternate layers of ingredients into greased baking dish starting with noodles, then meat, vegetables, tomato soup/sauce over and over ending with sauce.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-45 minutes.
Serves 6-8.

Thanks to Betty M., Marilyn's mom, for sharing this great recipe!

PROJECTS

The Greenhouse (continued)

Step 5 - Glass Wall Panels

The walls are a simple frame with clear plastic or glass in it. We will make the frame out of cedar or pressure treated 2 x 2's.
Measure the inside dimension between each wall stud. This needs to be exact since you want this to fit fairly tight. You can miter the corners if you like but I just butted mine at the corners.
On each of the 2 X 2's, dado a groove 1/4" wide (or whatever width your glass or plastic is) and 1/4" to 1/2" deep. Position the groove approximately 1/4" from the edge.

Next cut the plastic or glass (glazing) to fit inside the groove. I like to leave a little slop for expansion and contraction but not too much or else your glazing will fall out.

Lay out all the pieces, insert the glass and using deck screws, screw it all together. It doesn't get much simpler than that!

As you get each section done fit it into the frame to make sure it fits good. As long as you have it in place I would go ahead and screw it with deck screws. I put one screw at the top and bottom of each side and one in the middle. Repeat this with each panel until your greenhouse is completely enclosed, except for the door and roof.
Next week we will put the roof on.
