RunnerDuck Home

WELCOME BACK: First off, Happy Mother's Day, a couple of days early. We hope all you mothers out there have a fantastic weekend and are able to go have some fun with your families.
This past Wednesday we celebrated our third wedding anniversary. It's hard to believe that three years could blow by so fast but they've been a wonderful three years :-)
We're probably going to repeat this for the next couple of weeks but "please clean out your mailboxes"! Of course those of you that have full mailboxes will not get this weeks newsletter (if a tree falls in the woods will anyone hear it?). For future reference though, if you don't receive your weekly dose of the RunnerDuck check your mailbox, it's probably full. Every week about 5 - 10% of our readers don't get their newsletter because their mailbox is full. Be sure your email program is set to remove email from your server. Some email programs allow you to set it to clean out the server every so many days. How ever you set it could affect the email you get or more importantly, don't get.
Our friends Greg and Lori of FastWire Networks and the world famous duck cam at www.liveducks.com are here visiting from sunny Southern California. It's great to have them here but I'm sure they would rather be at home at this particular moment. The reason being that Mischief, their Black Runner Duck, is about to hatch seven eggs. She's four years old and this will be her first brood. Greg is becoming a regular Dr. Doolittle with all of the critters they now have or about to have. We wish them all the luck with the new babies. I'm sure that you'll be able to seem them in the not too distant future on their web site. If you ever have trouble remembering their web site we have a direct link right from our home page.
We've been excited and talking a lot about the addition of Ron Godin's art to the RunnerDuck Craft Store. Now we've added some more new art products from Ron. Check out the new picture and mirror frames along with the really neat lamps. Just go to www.runnerduck.com/crafts.htm and see what we have for you.
Be sure also to check out the ongoing contest we have below in "The Tempos News and CD" section below.

You are logged on to this newsletter as [[-Email-]] and receiving it because you are a friend of mine or a friend of theirs.
If you would like to be removed from receiving this newsletter just send an email to unsubscribe@runnerduck.com leaving the Subject and Body blank.

Thank you,
Ken and Marilyn

What's New This Week? We always get excited when we add a new affiliate store to our web site. In case you haven't noticed we don't just add stores for the sake of trying to do more business. We sincerely look for stores that offer a good product at a reasonable price. Alexia's Books is no exception. They offer children's books that are customized for that special child in your life. When you purchase one of their books they ask some questions like the child's name, the town they live in and more. This information is then printed in the child's custom book. All of their books are on line, less the pictures, so you can see how they will read.
If you have a special child that you would like to get a memorable gift for, check out Alexia's Books.

DigiTalk

I read a really nice article about the Internet and our troops. It seems that in the new theater of war the most popular way to stay in touch is by email. During previous conflicts mail with stamps were sent and often took a long time to catch up with the recipient. Telephones add instant conservation except most troops didn't have access to them. Now with the Internet the troops are getting email from family, friends and many others. Lots of schools have shown support to the men and women overseas by sending email to people they don't even know. This is a real moral booster to them.
If you know someone that is doing their part to protect the United States and it's allies, send them an email. It doesn't matter if they are overseas or just down the road it's always nice to get a letter from home.
I'm afraid this whole war on terrorism is far from over so the more support you can show the better for our troops.

SITE OF THE WEEK

About a year ago we told you about a great way to search the web using FirstStop Websearch. This powerful program is free and it allows you to search dozens of search engines at the same time.
Not only does it help you find exactly what you are looking for it's extremely fast. Most people use several web browsers because one will find web sites that the next one might not. Because FirstStop uses many different browsers all of the overlap is covered.
Get your free copy of FirstStop at www.firststopwebsearch.com/. Now get out there and start surfing.

Do you have a favorite site or little program that you use? We would appreciate it if you would share it with us and our readers. Let us know and we'll share your favorite with everyone else. The Internet is growing every day and we can't check all those great sites out by ourselves so please share your favorites with us.

KIDS CORNER

Egg Carton Caterpillar

These caterpillars look really neat placed around the garden and with any luck they will scare off the real bugs ;-) With even more luck they might turn into a beautiful butterfly!

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1 Egg Carton
  • Green Acrylic Paint
  • 2 Google Eyes
  • Colored Pipe Cleaners
  • Green Yarn or Heavy Twine
  • Hot Melt Glue Gun
You might want to get some help from a grownup with cutting the egg carton apart.
Cut the lid off of the egg carton and put it aside.
Cut the bottom half apart down the center.
Using scissors cut along the edge of the egg pockets very close to the top.
Glue the two halves together using hot melt glue.
Paint your caterpillar a bugs color of green.
Glue your yarn around the edge to help hide the seam.
Make two curly cues from pipe cleaners to mount the eyes on.
Poke holes in the head for the curly cues . Glue the curly cues into the holes and glue google eyes onto the ends of them.
Make legs for each section of the egg carton using pipe cleaners. Cut them about 1 1/2" long and bend them at 90 degrees.
Poke holes in the egg carton for each leg. Glue the legs into the holes in the egg carton.
You can add more decoration to your caterpillar using marking pens or acrylic paint. We put pom pom feet on ours and added some sparkle to the top. Just go crazy and have a ball. Make each one different so you have a variety of caterpillars.

Now go put you caterpillar in the garden and see what it scares away.
You can click on the pictures above to get a bigger view.

Remember we have all of our past kids projects archived on our web site at www.runnerduck.com/kids_corner.htm.

Joke of the Week

This weeks joke is not really a joke in the classic sense. It's a joke that you get to play and pass on to your friends. We first got wind of this from my cousin Cindy who read about it in the paper. Here's how it works.
How well do you like receiving sales phone calls at dinner time or when your are watching that news report or in the middle of... well you get the idea. We all hate those telemarketers but now there is something you can do about it.
The next time you get one of these calls here's what you do.

telemarketer - Hello, is Ken available?
ken - Yes he is!
telemarketer - May I speak to him?
ken - Just a moment please.

That's it, now put the phone down and wait until you get that beeping sound that your phone makes when there is no one there any longer. Now hang up your phone and wait for the next one.
The thought is if everyone does this that it will tie up the telemarketing industry to where it is no longer profitable to make those annoying calls.
We've also discovered that we have a good laugh every time this happens. Occasionally we put them on the speaker phone and listen to the fun.

The RunnerDuck Goodies Store

PROJECTS

Book Rack Step 2

Last week we cut our boards and dowels. This week we'll finish our book rack.

The first thing we want to do is make a pocket for the tiles in the two large ends. This can be done by setting up your router with stops on all four sides. I used a 1/2" 2 flute straight bit set about 1/4" deep. Be sure to route the side opposite the holes for the dowels on the one piece. The piece with the holes all the way through doesn't matter.

I decided to stain my pieces before they were assembled so that was my next step.
Next we glued the tiles into the pockets. I used a two part epoxy adhesive which seemed to work pretty good.

The final step in our project is to glue the dowels into the ends. I started by applying glue and taping each dowel into the small end until they bottomed out.
Next I slid on the slider end with the tile facing toward the small end.
Now apply glue to the three dowels, align the holes and start them in. Take a piece of scrap wood and place it on the end and tap it until all three dowels are seated.
Put the book rack on a flat surface and make sure everything is square.
After it dries you should be good to go.

Click on the pictures for a bigger view.

This would make a great gift for someone who's into reading or has lots of recipe books that they like to keep close at hand.

We are always looking for new projects to feature in our newsletter. If you have a project that you would like to share please drop us a line and we'll help get it published in the RunnerDuck review. We are looking for woodworking, gardening, crafts and kids projects so send us your thoughts at projects@runnerduck.com.

CONSERVATION TIP

If you are one of those families that have two cars, one big and one small, consider driving the economy car every chance you get. We have a 4WD pickup and a minivan and when we need to make a quick trip to the store we always take the minivan. In the long run this can save quite a bit of fuel especially since the majority of fuel efficiency is lost on short trips when the engine is cold. The next time you need to make a short trip take the more fuel efficient vehicle and leave the giant SUV at home. Better yet, WALK!

If you have a conservation tip please send it to duckmaster@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.

Until Next Time...

Go give mom a big hug and a happy wish. It's her day and no matter what Barbara Bush says I think it's great that we honor the most under appreciated people in the world. Happy Mother's Day to all you wonderful moms!
If you want to send an Internet greeting card to mom you can do that right from our site, www.runnerduck.com. Click on 123 Greetings in the middle of the page. You can predate your greeting making RIGHT NOW a good time to send mom a card.
