RunnerDuck Home

WELCOME BACK: Welcome to June! Can you believe that it's June all ready? I don't know if it's just us or is time just ripping by? I'm sitting here in our camper trying to get a head start on this weeks newsletter. We're camping at Port Susan Camping Club in Marysville, Washington, over the Memorial Day Weekend. I'm banging away on Lapdancer, my notebook computer, and trying to take care of a few things. I had forgot how painfully slow the world is over a 14.4 K modem. That's the speed of my cell phone when it's used as a modem. Oh well, we're on vacation so I guess that's OK.
The weather over the weekend was off and on rain but we were able to get a lot done. Ken installed a new CB radio in the pick up so now we can listen to all those truckers swear at each other. Actually it's more for emergencies and monitoring when we see traffic slowing down.
We did manage to get the trailer washed and ready to go for the next big outing. We don't know where that is yet but we'll be ready. The only thing left is to buy some new propane bottles. Did you know that ALL propane tanks that have the old style valves have to be replaced? The next time you take your propane tank in to be filled be ready to hear them say, "sorry, that's the wrong kind of valve and we won't fill those any more". The idea of the new tank is to prevent over filling which I guess was a problem with the old ones. I've been using propane tanks all my life and I've never seen this problem but I guess someone did and now we all get to change them out. There goes the land fills again.
Be sure to check out Ron Godin's art in the RunnerDuck Craft Store. His rustic Adirondack art is really something to see. Just go to www.runnerduck.com/crafts.htm and see what we have for you.
We have a Winner! We asked you to name The Tempos Horn and the band picked one from all the entries. Read about it in The Tempos news section below. While you're there read about The Tempos big swing band gig at the annual Ford picnic this weekend.

What's New This Week? June! As always at the first of each month we like to tell you what to plan for. Some of the high lights of June are Adopt-A-Cat Month, Dairy Month, National Accordion Awareness Month and National Rose Month. Of course the 14th is Flag Day which should be pretty spectacular this year and the 16th, Fathers Day.
We are always looking for different events each month and we have stumbled upon the mother load of events. If you go to Two Geeks Guide To June, http://members.aol.com/TwoGeekInc/jun97.htm#attrib you will find absolutely everything that is happening in June. We've never seen this many events. We are serious when we say that you have to bookmark this site so you know what's happening each and every day.

DigiTalk

I was reading an article this week from our friends at Lockergnome on toolbars. You know a toolbar is that little bar that sits at the bottom of your screen and is often called the "Start" bar. I was amazed to find out all the cool things that it can do. Since I've only tried it out on my Windows 2000 machine I 'm not sure what all versions it will work on but give it a try.
First off did you know that you can move the toolbar around? Click and drag it to the top or side of the screen and there it will stay. Right click on an open portion of the bar to change its settings. Click on properties in the drop down list and set whether the tool bar is always on top and to auto hide it.
If you right click on the toolbar and select Toolbars and then Desktop you'll get Desktop and My Computer added to the toolbar. You'll also see two small arrows off to the right end of the toolbar. Right click on them and you'll see a list of everything on your desk top, cool.
Another neat feature is to click and drag My Computer from the toolbar over to the side or bottom of the screen then release your mouse. You now have a second toolbar with quick access to everything in your drives. Hold down the Control key and right click on a drive and you'll see all the folders for that drive. Click on a folder and it will open up. Again you can right click on it to set the icon size and whether it's on top all the time and to make it auto hide. In Windows 2000 you can right click on the toolbar and select Open. This will open up a box where you can add more files to this tool bar. I think in some versions you can just drag programs onto the toolbar to add them.
Back to the main tool bar, there is a vertical bar between different sections of this bar. You can click and drag on these bars to resize each section.
Play around with these neat features and get it set just the way you like it. You don't have to use the default settings that your computer came with. Be adventurous and have fun.

SITE OF THE WEEK

The travel season is fast approaching and many of you will be staying in hotels during those travels. We've found this great site that is a free travel tool that can simultaneously search up to 16 unique travel websites (including Expedia, CheapestDeals.com, AANHotels, HRN and more) as well as hotels directly for hotel pricing and availability. Travelaxe is not a travel agency. They do not book rooms or make reservations of any kind. Once users find the hotel rooms they're interested in, Travelaxe sends them directly to the booking page of the selected travel website or hotel to actually make the reservation. You can find them at www.travelaxe.net/Home.html
The download is about 2.5 meg and it installs quickly. They do require that you register in order to use their services but it is rather painless.
Good luck searching for that perfect hotel and have a great vacation.

We are always looking for new and interesting sites. If you know of a site that you think our readers would like please share it with us and our readers. Let us know and we'll share your favorite with everyone else. The Internet is growing every day and we can't check all those great sites out by ourselves so please share your favorites with us.

KIDS CORNER

Plastic Bubbles

Last week we made some Kids Clay and this week we are going to stay with that same "make and play" theme and make Plastic Bubbles. These are really fun and you can make great big bubbles with this stuff and it bounces good too.

Here's what you'll need to make a small batch:

  • 1/2 Cup Gel Glue
  • 1/2 Cup Liquid Starch
  • Food Coloring if you like
  • Plastic Straw
Mix the Gel and Starch together.
Add food coloring to suit your eye.
Keep it in an air tight bag when you are not playing with it.
Put a straw into it and see how big of a bubble you can blow. Pretty cool, huh?
Roll it into a ball and it bounces too!

If you have a kids project that would be suitable for Fathers Day we'd love to share it with our readers. Just contact marilyn@runnerduck.com and we'll do the rest.

Remember we have all of our past kids projects archived on our web site at www.runnerduck.com/kids_corner.htm.

We just ordered a book for Camden our grandson from Alexia's Books and it arrived today. The service was quick, shipping was free, and the book is of good quality. He is really going to treasure this book for years to come. It has our names in it and has a great story all about Camden. We can't wait to give it to him.
If you have a special child that you would like to get a memorable gift for, check out Alexia's Books.

Be sure and also visit the
RunnerDuck Toy Store.

The Tempos News and CD of the Week

We have a winner and it is JoAnne G. from Gig Harbor, WA. At band rehearsal this past week the band voted on the best name from the names that were submitted. JoAnne named it Rooty. She felt like the horn probably made a sound like rooty toot tooty and hence the name, Rooty. For her efforts she will receive a copy of The Tempos CD, Swing Set. Honorable mentions go to Louis S. from Fullerton, CA. for Sassy and Darla D. for tHorn (TrebleHorn). I suppose we should also mention one name that we got from an Old Tempos player, Lloyd, Baffoon! Thanks Lloyd, NOT!
We want to thank you all that entered and appreciated all your suggestions. Keep watching because we'll have more contests in the future.

The Tempos big swing band is playing at Bellevue Community College in Bellevue, Washington this Sunday. It's a wonderful outdoor picnic, concert and car show put on by the Early Ford Club of Washington. Everyone is welcome to come and see all the really neat cars that are on display. There is every kind of car imaginable, not just Fords. The gates open around 10:00 am and the band starts at 11:00. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the event.

Hard rocking music and cars always go together and Hiram Bullock has just the music. His hard driving guitar and great rough singing are perfect for listening to on your way to a car show. This 1995 CD has Hiram's renditions of many 60's rock stars like Jimmy Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dillon and many more. You can get "Manny's Car Wash" by the Hiram Bullock Band this week at a SUPER DISCOUNT of $2.60 off at www.runnerduckmusic.bcentral-vstore.com

Joke of the Week

How to call the Police... True Story from the Meridian, Mississippi STAR:

George Phillips of Meridian Mississippi was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.
He phoned the police, who asked, "Is someone in your house?" and he said no.
Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be along when available. George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.
"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed.
Well, you don't have to worry about them now cause I've just shot them all."
Then he hung up.
Within five minutes three police cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips residence.
Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.
One of the policemen said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"
George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

   THIS WEEKS FREE RECIPE
Pineapple Chicken Squares
Here's a really good Hawaiian style recipe that's great for when company comes.

  • 3/4 Cup Pineapple, crushed
  • 1 Cup Chicken, cooked and cubed
  • 1/4 Cup Toasted Almonds, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garlic Salt
  • 1/4 Cup Mayonnaise
  • 8 ounce Tube of Crescent Rolls
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame Seeds

Mix Pineapple, Chicken, Almonds, Ginger, Garlic Salt and Mayonnaise together.
Separate the Crescent Rolls into four rectangles. Pinch the perforations together so they will not separate.
Cut the four rectangles into eight squares.
Place 1/4 cup of the mixture onto each square and top with another square. Pinch the edges together to seal.
Brush with the melted Butter and sprinkle with Sesame Seeds.
Place on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes.
Makes 4 sandwiches.

Your guests will go nuts over these tasty little morsels.

PROJECTS

Do It Yourself Bio Filter - Step 3

Last week we completed the inlet tube and we start this week with the drain and then finish up the tank.
The drain is made up of a 1" PVC female adapter, 1" male adapter, 1" PVC ball valve, 1" PVC pipe to threaded garden hose fitting and a 1/4" piece of wood for filler since the two adapters will not tighten down together.
Drill a through hole near the bottom of the tank. Drill the same size hole in the 1/4" piece of wood.
Glue the garden hose fitting into the valve.
Cut a 2" long piece of 1" PVC to connect the valve to the male adapter.
Glue the male adapter and the valve together with the 2" piece.
Using silicone sealer around the hole, install the drain valve through the wood, tank and into the female adapter. Tighten them up and let the silicone set up.

For the outlet we used 2" PVC since we want to make sure that the tank doesn't get backed up. If we made the inlet and outlet the same size there could be some potential for it backing up. We used the same arrangement of fittings as we used on the inlet pipe and drain to get through the tank.
You will need a 2" female adapter, 2" male adapter, 2" PVC pipe, about 3" long, 2" 90 degree elbow and a 1/4" piece of wood for filler.
Drill a through hole in the tank so the bottom of the hole is right at the top of the top grid. This will be below the inlet pipe.
Drill the same size hole in the 1/4" piece of wood.
Cut a small piece of 2" PVC pipe approximately 3" to splice the outside adapter to the 90-degree elbow.
Glue the elbow and adapter together.
Put the 1/4" piece of wood on the outside of the tank and insert the adapter through the wood and hole in the tank.
Put a bead of silicone sealer around the fitting before you tighten it down. Be sure the 90-degree elbow is pointed in the direction you need. Ours is pointed straight down.
Next cut up the washable furnace filter mats into 8" x 8" squares. Marilyn would highly suggest wearing long pants and gloves while doing this. She didn't and was itching for a couple of days after.
Now it's time to put the whole thing together. Put the bottom support in place. Put the lower grid in with the hole aligned for the inlet pipe. Next comes the top support. Place it so that its legs sit on top of the bottom supports legs.
Now start filling the middle section with the filter pieces. Temporarily put the inlet pipe in place to help with alignment later. Just place the filter pieces randomly and again wear gloves. Fill up the entire middle section.

Pull the inlet pipe out and put on the top grid again aligning the hole for the inlet pipe.
Put the inlet pipe back into the tank and attach it to the side of the tank. Do not glue it or use silicone sealer. You will need to take this off for cleaning from time to time.

Once you get your tank in place you can put a layer of small rocks on top of the grid to help hold it in place. This may not be necessary but it makes it look neat.

Next week we will build the Jenny box for the pump and finish our pond bio filter project.

We are always looking for new projects to feature in our newsletter. If you have a project that you would like to share please drop us a line and we'll help get it published in the RunnerDuck review. We are looking for woodworking, gardening, crafts and kids projects so send us your thoughts at projects@runnerduck.com.

CONSERVATION TIP

Conservation can cover a lot of areas but we usually think in terms of water, electricity or gas. How about conserving our land by disposing of hazardous items correctly? Rechargeable batteries are great but they need to be disposed of properly at the end of their life.
There is a new public-service organization to help you get rid of these batteries. They are called the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation. Home Depot and many other hardware stores have put in a battery recycle center. Just take your old rechargeable batteries to the store with you the next time you go shopping and drop them off. To find a collection outlet near you call 800-8-BATTERY or log onto www.rbrc.org.

If you have a conservation tip please send it to conservation@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.
