WELCOME BACK:   We're having a heat wave. A tropical heat wave. The temperature's rising, ain't it surprising, we're having a heat wave. Everybody sing!!

Western Washington is known for its clouds and rain. When the rest of the country is basking in warm sunny weather it's drizzling here. Well that was up until this week. Today we are breaking a record of 84 degrees F. by about seven degrees or more depending on just what part of town you are in. Ken's cousin Cindy in Harrisburg, PA wrote, "Hope all is well in the western front. We easterners are about out of long underwear, fuel, and PATIENCE. If we wanted this weather we could move to Seattle. At least then the scenery would be worthwhile." It really made her day when I told her we were breaking records with wonderful warm sunny weather. Of course the saying here in Western Washington is "gee, summer came on a Friday this year".

The good news is that there is a lot to do on sunny days in the area. Salty Sea Days are going on up in Everett this weekend so if you are in town you might want to check that out. There are lots of rides, a Midway, Parade and a great Farmers Market.

There are lots of other fun things to do so get out and enjoy the area and the weather.

For those of you that have been following along, Jenni, Ken's daughter is coming along nicely in the baby making department. She's not due until the end of July but everything is on track and the baby is looking really good. Jenni is having a lot of pain in her ribs which we think is from an old broken rib injury but the pressure of getting bigger and bigger doesn't help. Her and her family came over this week for dinner and Camden, our grandson got to feed the fishies and throw rocks in the river. We sure know how to have a good time with a two and a half year old.

We are continuing our search for crafters who would like to sell their creations through our web site. We currently only have one persons crafts on display, Ron Godin, but would love to add more. We are talking with a couple of people right now but the more the merrier. Drop us a line and some pictures of your art and we'll see if we can work together.

What's New This Week? Some of you may remember in the news a few months ago about a World War II Messerschmitt fighter plain crashing on landing. The plane was a Me 262 twin engine jet that had just been built from the ground up. The reason I mention this is because Tuesday I (Ken) got to go Paine Field and tour the facility where this plane was made. As it turns out the one that crashed has been totally rebuilt and will be ready to fly in a few weeks. Not only are they rebuilding this plane but building four more. It is totally amazing to see the craftsmanship going into these birds. They are working to the original 1942 plans from the Messerschmitt factory.

Some interesting facts are there was a shortage of aluminum during the war so the main wing strut was made from steel. In these replicas they are doing the same thing even though it would be lighter and better to make it out of aluminum. The wheel covers are made from plywood as is the entire cockpit area. Again this is exactly as it was.
Two of the planes have been sold, one to a private individual and a second one to the Messerschmitt museum in Germany. If you are interested the other three are for sale at a cool two million each.
If you are ever in the Paine Filed area they are just a few hangers up from the fire station and welcome visitors. You can also check them out at the Stormbirds web site, www.stormbirds.com. Just click on the Me 262 Project link in the upper right hand corner. You'll find lots of other historic flying information if you are interested.

Do you have a web site? Does it compliment our web site in any way? If so we'd love to swap links with you. Even if you don't swap with us you should try to find as many people as you can to swap links with. It's one of the best ways of getting your web site out there and viewed by more people. It also helps with the rankings on search engines like Google.
Don't have a web site or don't know what we are talking about? Links are the text and graphics that you click on within a web site that take you somewhere else. If you have a favorite web site like let's say "RunnerDuck", you should look around the site for links to other sites. Usually links take you to other sites that have common interests. It's like they are recommending that you visit these other sites because they think you will like them and find more interesting things.
Oh yeah, back to linking to our site. If you have a web site and would like to put up a link to RunnerDuck just go to www.runnerduck.com/banners.htm and select a banner that would look nice on your site. Copy the text for the banner and paste it in you web page. We'll return the favor by putting your link within our pages. That's assuming that your site is family friendly.

SITE OF THE WEEK

Have you been to Mars lately? In a few short months you'll get to do the next best thing. There will be a live telecast (webcast) from the two new robots that are expected to land on Mars January 4, 2004 and January 25th. Of course it won't quite be live since it takes something like nine minutes for the signal to arrive back at earth.
The first step in the webcasts will be the launch of robot number one at 2:06 PM EDT this Sunday, June 8th. You will be able to watch this launch by logging onto www.jpl.nasa.gov/webcast/mer/. The second launch will also be webcast on June 25th at 12:38 AM EDT. As always things can happen and schedules can slide but this should be a pretty exciting time. For more information on the NASA's Mars Exploration Rover (MER) project you can go to www.nasa.gov.
While you are at the NASA site you should check it out really good. They have completely redone the site and it is pretty snazzy. I'm sure our tax dollars paid for it so you should take advantage of it.

MARILYN'S CORNER

Dad's Dresser Basket

This is a simple little project that might just make a good Father's Day gift. Dads always need places to put things like keys, change, pocket knives, etc. Rather than just throwing them all over the dresser give him this basket so everything will be in one place.

Here is a list of the things you will need.
  • A small basket.
  • Pinecones or you could use sea shells.
  • Hot melt glue. Be careful so you don't burn yourself. You might want to get some adult help with this.

Try to find pinecones or shells that will fit around the edge of the basket.
Carefully glue each pinecone or shell to the rim of basket. Hold each one in place until the glue sets up.
Put a gift certificate to his favorite hardware store in it and you're ready to go.

Like we said, very simple but puts a big smile on dad's face.

We hope you enjoy Marilyn's Corner and look forward to all the fun things she brings you each week. If you have a fun project that would be suitable for our newsletter we'd love to share it with our readers. Just contact marilyn@runnerduck.com and we'll do the rest.

Remember we have all of our past projects archived on our web site at www.runnerduck.com. Just click on the Projects or Kids Only Eggs.

The Tempos
News and CD of the Week

The Tempos had a great time at the Ford Picnic at the Bellevue Community College. There were hundreds of wonderful automobiles, trucks, busses, fire trucks, and more. It was one of the better turn outs and everyone seemed to have a great time. Of course the terrific music of the Tempos made it even a bigger success. None of you came up and said hi to me so either you were too shy or not there. Mark your calendar for the first Sunday in June 2004 for the next Ford Picnic.

You can check out our summer schedule at the Tempos web site www.thetempos.com/jobs.htm. If you are making plans to visit Seattle this summer try to fit in one of our fun concerts.

Don't forget that The Tempos big swing band is available for hire. If you have a special event that could use the wonderful music of a classic big band be sure to contact thetempos@runnerduck.com.

You either love him or you're not sure about him but Miles Davis set the early standards for jazz. One of the things that people missed was that he progressed far beyond his beginnings. Many people couldn't get with that because it wasn't "pure jazz" any more. Well I feel fortunate that I was able to finally get beyond that and ended up liking his later music as well.
This week's album is an old fusion recording that I just fell in love with. Miles plays a lot like Count Basie in his sparse amount of notes. Marcus Miller on bass just blows me away and the incredible guitar playing of Mike Stern fills up this CD. If you like Miles and fusion then be sure to add this one to your collection.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A young man, wanted to get his beautiful wife something nice for their first wedding anniversary. So, he decides to buy her a cell phone. She is all excited and she loves her phone. He shows her and explains to her all the features on the phone.

The next day the wife goes to get her hair done. Her phone rings and it's her husband. "Hi hon," he says, "How do you like your new phone?"

"I just love it, it's so small and your voice is clear as a bell. But there's one thing I don't understand. How did you know I was at the beauty parlor?

CONSERVATION TIP

As the weather gets hotter the air conditioners start coming on. At least here in the northwest we get some pretty good cooling at night even after a hot day. Take advantage of that coolness by opening windows and using fans to pull the hot air out of your house. Then in the morning when the sun comes up close up everything to conserve that coolness until things really start to heat up. Then turn on the air conditioning to keep things cool.

If you have a conservation tip please send it to conservation@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.

COOKBOOK
SUGGESTION OF THE WEEK

(CLICK)

"The Pressured Cook" by Lorna J. Sass

This week's cookbook suggestion comes from one of our faithful readers, Carol Elkins. On these hot summer days when you want to hurry up and get out of the kitchen this might just be the ticket.
Carol writes, "This is the most-used cookbook in my kitchen. I appreciate Lorna's use of ingredients that I am likely to have in my kitchen and her use of a lot of spices. It makes every meal an adventure! For gifts, I often give this book packed inside a pressure cooker."
Thanks for the tip Carol we look forward to receiving our copy soon.

Be sure and visit the RunnerDuck Cookbook Store for other great savings on cookbooks and cooking supplies.

PROJECTS

Rocker Planter

This is a fairly simple project that I got from my neighbor Harold. It's one of those projects that only takes a part of a day but the results are great.

Here's what you'll need:
  • 1" X 8" X 72" Cedar
  • 1 1/4" Deck Screws
You may have to adjust your dimensions based on the thickness of your wood. Our finished wood was 3/4".

Click on image for a larger picture.
Cut the back 7 1/2" X 15 1/2".
Cut a full radius at the top.
Cut the two arms 2" X 9 1/2".
Cut the two sides 5 1/2" X 7 1/4".
Cut the front 5 1/2" X 9".
Cut the bottom 6 1/2" X 7 1/2". I would check this dimension with the sides and back in place before I started cutting. Drill some drain holes in the bottom, maybe six at a 1/4".
Cut the two rockers 2 1/2" X 12". Radius the bottom front and bottom back as shown.
Screw everything together.
Fill with dirt and flowers and enjoy.

These are so easy to make that you may want to make some for gifts. Many dads like to grow flowers and it might just be the perfect Father's Day present.

We hope you've enjoyed this project and have good success with it. Remember, if you ever have any problems with our projects just drop us a line and we'll try to help.
