With schools soon to be out for the Holidays we've been trying to find projects that will make neat presents and be easy enough for parents and kids to make together. I think you'll find that this weeks project falls right in that category.
This weeks project comes from Frank M. in Bothell, Washington. Thanks for the neat idea Frank.

  • 3/4" thick piece of wood at least 6" wide. Pine would do just fine.
  • 2" X 2" 14" long or a 14" tree branch 3" to 4" in diameter split in half.
  • 16" of 1/8" twine or rope
  • 1" diameter wood bead with a hole in the center
  • Red, White, Blue, Brown and Yellow paint
  • Staples big enough to go into the wood and over the twine

THE WOODPECKER:
Cut the woodpecker out of 3/4" wood using the pattern we've provided at www.runnerduck.com/images/woodpecker.gif. Just print out the picture and trace it onto your wood.Drill a 1/16" hole where indicated.
Paint your woodpecker using the pattern at www.runnerduck.com/images/woodpecker.gif.Screw in a 1/8" eyebolt as shown.

THE BASE:
The base can be made from a 2" X 2" or a tree branch that is split in half.
Using a chisel cut a square 7/8" X 2 3/4" hole centered on the base.
On the back of the base, cut a notch 3/8" wide and 1/4" deep that runs from the bottom of the square hole to the bottom of the base. This will be a notch for the pull rope.

ASSEMBLY:
Tie a knot in one end of the rope and pass it through the eyebolt in the woodpecker.
Drive a nail through the base and through the hole in the woodpecker. Make sure the nail is long enough to go through the woodpecker and into the other side of the base. Make sure the nail is not too long and does not come out the other side of the base.
Run the rope down the groove in the back of the base and staple over the rope to hold it in place. Make sure it is not too tight so the rope will slide through it easily when pulled.
Tie a wooden bead on the bottom of the rope.

That's it. Now wrap it up as a great Christmas present or hang it near the front door.
